The Palm Islands, which are also known as "The Palm Dubai" and "The Palms", are the 2 largest man made islands in the world, are being constructed along the coastline of Dubai.
The project is under control of Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corporation), and will increase Dubai's shoreline by some 120km (72 miles), creating a large number of residential, leisure, and entertainment areas. The project idea was first announced in May of 2002 and the two man made artificial palm tree-shaped resort islands are expected to maintain Dubai's position as a premium tourist destination. The Palm Islands have also been referred to as 'The Eighth Wonder of the World'.
The two islands, The Palm Jumeirah and The Palm Jebel Ali, are being built in the shape of date trees and consist of a trunk; a crown with 17 fronds; and a surrounding crescent which also doubles as a break breakwater. In all, the island can support some 60 luxury hotels, 4,000 exclusive residential villas, 1,000 unique water homes , 5,000 shoreline apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas, various dive sites and other leisure amenities.
The project took over four years of careful planning and feasibility studies, which ensure that the islands are not disrupting the environment. Stage one of the development of The Palm Islands, involves the building of land foundations. After these are constructed, the next stage involved the construction of infrastructure and services, as well as the 300 meter (990 feet) bridges linking the islands and mainland. Finally, construction starts on the homes, townhouses, and apartments.

It contains themed boutique hotels, three types of villas (Signature Villas, Garden Homes, and Town Homes), and shoreline apartments. The Palm, Jebel Ali - Dubai The Palm Jebel Ali is considered more of an tourist destination for people of all ages, and is intended to cater to both residents and tourists. The Jebel Ali will also be 50% larger than The Palm Jumeirah, and includes six marinas, a 'Sea Village', a water theme park and water homes built on stilts between the fronds and the crescent. Construction began on this island in October 2002 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.
